back in the old days the local people didn't feel at home in Westende where the Frenh-speaking tourists had the upperhand. In time the necessity of having their own beach grew. The beach behind "Home Marçunvin" (now Calidris) was named St-Laurentius beach. Namedafter the patron saint of the parish. It couldn't get any clearer, this was the beach of the local people. In 1932 the name canged to "St-Laureinsstrand".
People playing at the beach got thirsty and soon family Levecque saw in to that, so they put dow a tent on the beach to sell refreshment for the people. Around 1927 the little tent was replaced by a wooden construction. We were told that landlrd Crombez walked along the beach when familie Levecques was painting their little barrack. He was touched by te imput of the familie so he sold them a piece of his land. This was very exceptional because he didn't want to sell any land there. Until today that is how it remained.
The " Welkom " was built in 1932 and rebuilt in 1961 is the only construction in that b zone. In 1955 the city put down a triumphal arch, which meant an official recognition. In 1967 they made a promenade from Westende-Beach to St-Laureinsbeach.
Today the “ Welkom “ grew to Restaurant“ Bistro Guido “ , who offers you an excellent kitchen with a cosy restaurant for everyone's budget and taste.
Thank you for your visit and we hope to see you again soon.
